The public needs to know exactly how the aggressor state treats Ukrainian prisoners of war and illegally detained civilians—and what their fate is—but they also need to understand that captivity is not a final sentence. Once released, people will continue living their lives. This point is particularly important for those still waiting for their family and loved ones to be released.
The subject of captivity is a sensitive one. A careless word can cause pain to someone who has been through captivity, to their family and loved ones, and to the thousands waiting for their loved ones to be released. By making unnecessary information public, one can also inadvertently harm those who are still being held captive. Such a disclosure can undermine the efforts of the organizations and individuals negotiating their release, as well as those are actively working towards prisoner exchanges.
