From Brynsk To Irkutsk: what happens to Ukrainian prisoners of war behind Russian prison walls

The first prisoner exchange since the beginning of the full-scale war happened on March 1, 2022, in the Sumy region. Five Ukrainian soldiers were returned from captivity. Since then, and until June 15, 2023, 43 more exchanges have been reported. In total, about 2,500 Ukrainian soldiers were returned from captivity.

There is no exact number of prisoners currently held in the Russian Federation, but it is estimated to be in the thousands. Some of them are held in the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, but most have been taken to the territory of Russia.
