Crimean Tatars imprisoned in the Russian Federation: solitary confinement, arbitrary punishments, and inadequate medical care

Source: OHCHR

Since 2014, the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has documented human rights violations committed against residents of Crimea, particularly Crimean Tatars. These violations include poor detention conditions for Crimean residents who were detained in Crimea and often forcibly transferred to the Russian Federation—in violation of international humanitarian law—for trial and imprisonment. We have documented arbitrary placement in solitary confinement and punitive isolation cells, restrictions on family visits and other forms of communication with the outside world, as well as the lack of adequate medical care.
